Yesterday, at the Somerset YMCA’s service awards breakfast, in addition to honoring Marcia’s 15 years of service to this Y branch, she was also honored with a Special Recognition Staff Award for a Lifetime of service to the YMCA (26 years). The award was presented to her by her good friend Adele Morgan, and attached is the script Adele wrote and read to the attendees.
Among the many accomplishments she’s had during her career with the YMCA, she was recognized for her strength and positive attitude in dealing with Early Onset AD and breast cancer. Adele was fabulous, Marcia was gracious and strong and not a dry eye in the room, ending with a nice standing ovation!
The YMCA is a special place for their commitment to community service, and to helping others. I met with Marcia’s supervisor (Jonathan) several weeks ago as I had heard some members were complaining about some of Marcia’s classes. My intent was to tell Jonathan that I understood they have a business to run and would understand if they couldn’t afford to keep her on staff. He told me they couldn’t afford not to. While it was true some new members weren’t satisfied with their experience, there were many more that came to her classes because of Marcia, and that it would not be consistent with the mission of the YMCA to walk away from Marcia when community support is so important and needed, especially after all she’s given to the YMCA.
