Marcia, as I’ve known her for more than 20 years, has been a fabulous mom, who gave up a full time career to stay at home with our kids. She’s been a great wife, really running the household as the most frugal and smartest of shoppers. Marcia is known as a master planner, organized better than anyone I’ve ever known. She’s an expert “coupon clipper”, unexpected negotiator (cars, appliances) with the motto “never pay full price”. And before she gave up full time work for part time personal training and teaching several other fitness classes, she was an award winning director with the YMCA. And finally, Marcia has been a cultivator of friendships. Thoughtful, caring, sweet, and always living up to the nickname given to her in college, “Spunky”. She was very social, and loved being around people.
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is changing most of this. But she is handling this very unexpected illness with strength, courage and grace. She has never wallowed in self-pity and continues to give maximum effort in everything she does. Her personality and personal warmth are being paid back to our family ten-fold. So many people are helping us with meals, transportation, visits and words of encouragement. If there is a silver lining to Marcia getting sick, it’s seeing community support for us from very busy people when we need it most. I don’t know how people do what they do, but it is inspiring and I can easily see how this type of selflessness can spread!
